'FRED THE FLY'S ACCOUNT OF HELEN, EV, CARROL AND MARGARET'S TRIP IN ENDLAND, WALES, IRELAND AND SCOTLAND, 1996.
On a warm day of Friday 21st June, the girls arrived at Heathrow and patiently waited for Margaret
s arrival from New York at 7.30 a.m. She finally emerged minus her luggage, which was delivered to their hotel 30 hours later. The girls conned the Insight tour lady for free transport to the Ryan Hotel which Carrol and Margaret were booked into for the second tour to Europe. On arrival they hailed a lovely black cab and went to the Kennedy, where they had a beef and horseradish roll for $4.50, then home for a 2 hour sleep before getting a No. 24 bus to see Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. After a chicken roll they got a bus to the hotel at 9.30 by which time the night had just closed in.
Saturday 22nd. After a continental breakfast, the No 24 bus took them to Westminster Bridge where the ferry left for Greenwich. After an informative introduction to buildings of interest -including the 'unemployed window cleaners building' (the new all glass constructions) they arrived at the Greenwich wharf where the Cutty Sark is berthed. She is a famous clip[per ship which was launched in 1869 . She brought tea to England from China in the 19th century. After a walk, the train to Charing Cross, then the No. 24 home A 3 course meal for 29 pounds was enjoyed. Margaret in particular found price comparison interesting.
